Paving stones are a beautiful addition to any landscape or outdoor design project. Ideal for walkways, driveways, patios and paths, paving stones offer a durable and versatile option for upgrading your outdoor living space. However, a paving stone project does require a little bit of extra work as the longevity of your paving stones will rely heavily on the strength and stability of the joints. Fortunately, Nicolock Paving Stones is here to help with instructions on how to use polymeric sand for paver jointing to get the most out of your hardscape.
Polymeric sand is a mixture of fine sand and special additives that harden when mixed with water. When the sand hardens, it locks the pavers together and provides a stable foundation to better support the paving stones and protect them from damage. Unlike traditional paver sand, polymeric sand has the added benefit of offering resistance to erosion, weed growth and insects.
Using polymeric sand for jointing paving stones is easy and very similar to using traditional paver sand.
1.) Prepare the paving stones. Make sure all of the paving stones are clean and free of debris. You'll want to kill and remove any weeds that may be present and sweep up or blow away any excess sand that may already be in place. A thorough sweep and washing is recommended to ensure a clean surface for jointing. You should also take some time to inspect the drainage system and address any issues as water accumulation can compromise the integrity of the jointing.
2.) Apply polymeric sand to the paving stones. Evenly distribute the sand all over the surface of the paving stones, then use a clean push broom to disperse the sand evenly, ensuring all the joints are filled. You'll want to pay special attention to tight spaces and double-check when finished to make sure all joints are filled. Use a vibrating plate compactor to help settle the sand into place and apply more as needed to fill the joints.
3.) Activate the sand. Once the sand is in place, it's time to activate the embedded binding agents by adding water. Lightly mist the paving stones with water, ensuring the sand is saturated, but not to the point of puddling. Once moistened, allow the sand to dry for 24-48 hours to allow the binding agents to harden.
4.) Apply a sealant to protect the joints. Once the polymeric sand has had adequate time to cure, sweep away any excess sand from the surface of the paving stones and apply a sealant. The sealant will guard against stains, UV damage and moisture infiltration, keeping the joints strong and the paving stones vibrant.
Polymeric sand is strong and durable, but routine maintenance is still important. Regularly inspect the joints for signs of erosion and weed growth and address issues promptly. Reapply polymeric sand as needed to replenish worn-out joints and seal the surface periodically. With regular maintenance, you can enjoy a beautiful outdoor living area for years to come.
